Welcome to the New MarsNews.com

Posted by jburk to Website News at March 5, 2004 11:59 PM

Five years ago on March 5th, 1999, MarsNews.com was begun by James Burk and Dustin Green to provide the latest news and information about the planet Mars. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of MarsNews.com, we are launching this redesigned website with lots of new information and special features.

I have written an Overview of the Redesign which describes in detail all of the new sections of the website. You may also be interested in reading about the History of MarsNews.com.

Around a thousand articles are present in the new NewsWire Database. In our efforts to eliminate all the broken links from the old system, we have not yet moved over the approximately 3,000 articles remaining. We will be working to do so over the next couple of weeks. But, as you may imagine, fixing all those links has proven to be a big job!

We also have not yet finished the "Image of the Day" feature, which we will use in partnership with What On Mars. It should be ready in a few days, and we will begin providing daily a selected image of interest.

Please explore the new site and contact us if you have any questions or comments. Also let us know if you spot any broken links or something that doesn't appear to be working correctly.

Been a reader for a long time, like the change.
Should be more "new Vision" centered.
( cant see direct linking to proj Constelation, etc)

But loved it.

Tks James

This site was always tops on my search list for what was current in the news with regards to space exploration and still is. FYI Also chech out a few other sites on Mars and space exploration that I ocasionally will visit. martiansoil, newmars, mars-frontier org, marssociety org, and lets not forget your sister site projectconstellation us news. With all these sites just maybe we can be and will be lead to a more complete comunications as well as understanding of planet Earth and of Mars; of course possibly even the solar system in time.

I like this, looks clean and fresh!
This site really is on the top of my list of exciting daily sites.

Keep up the good work!

One problem I notice is that the column of links to the right is partially hidden by the center (white background) news, I'd guess half hidden. I'm using IE6. Does anyone else have this problem?

I too have the right column obscured by the center column.

Also: The first several stories at the top are all scrambled, almost as if they are printed on top of each other. Things clear up starting with the story entitled "Take That Opportunity...". All above that is unreadable.

Apologies if you are having any problems viewing the site. We will look into these right away. If you could email us a screenshot (use the Print Screen button on your keyboard), it could help us to diagnose what is going on.

Thanks,

James Burk

- The new format looks great. I like the daily news now at the top, rather than below all the "featured stories" as in the old incarnation.
- However, I liked having a "featured story" that would persist at the top for a while, even though i didnt like having to always scroll down to see the latest news of the day.
- Perhaps there just doesnt happen to be a featured story at the moment, if these will return, perhaps they could be in a more compact teaser format so the daily news doesnt get pushed down out of view.

Hi , this site is great . keep me posted with the details as and when new .. there could probably include the evidence of life existing on mars or not .

Dear Mr. Burk:

I wanted to give you some favorable comments on the redesign of your website. I am an avid space nut and read your website and Space.Com and Space Daily. Both of these two other websites have gone through recent web re-designs, but none of them were as successful or as user friendly as your is.

I thought you would like to know.

A devoted reader.
