These Boots Are Made For Walking

Posted by tourdemars to Humans To Mars at March 16, 2004 10:40 AM

How will future space suits differ from the current ones? Well, for one thing, the boots will be made for walking. Astronauts who wear space suits for extra-vehicular activities (EVAs) don't walk. They hover and float, or their feet are placed into foot restraints so they don't drift away. In the future, however, astronauts may go to Mars as part of NASA's new vision. And they'll need very different boots to walk on the planet's surface or drive a rover.

So how much different from the old Apollo programs are these. Probably other than made of more modern materials, which will hopefully make them lighter. Otherwise they are probably not much different in concepts from the days of old.

I seriously doubt they are going to be that similar to the Apollo suits. The Apollo suits were designed without the knowledge of the environment they were going to be used in.

Are there American suits on the ISS or only just the old Russian ones. That were used on the last EVA repairs.
