NASA's Opportunity tried driving uphill out of its landing-site crater during its 56th sol, ending at 10:05 p.m. March 21, PST, but slippage prevented success. The rover is healthy, and it later completed a turn to the right and a short drive along the crater's inner slope. Controllers plan to send it on a different route for exiting the crater on sol 57.TrackBack URL for this entry:

Well if there were already a mission on it's way to mars we could just wait 6 to 9 months and then an astronaut could just push or lift it out of the hole that it is in.
Or since that will not be happening any time soon 2035 perhaps, you can use the arm to level out a better ramp for it to exit by.

They didn’t expect the Martian surface to have so much MUD!!!
I guess they will be designing the next rover taking this into consideration.
The answer would of been a simple winch that can eject and be wound back in, most range rovers have them.
The winch would have to be able to change its velocity and trajectory though and be able to detach in the worst case scenario.
