Mars Society Political Task Force Website

Posted by tourdemars to Mars Society at March 31, 2004 09:59 PM

The purpose of the U.S. Political Task Force is to support the endeavor of The Mars Society to establish a human mission to Mars as the primary goal of the U.S. Space Program. This will be accomplished by means of an aggressive campaign of contact with our elected officials asking them to actively support the required technologies and legislation in support of this vision. The Political Task Force will mobilize and assist our membership and other space advocates with up-to-date information and the necessary tools for effective communication to accomplish this goal. Further, we will seek to act in ways that garner sufficient media and public support for the goal of sending humans to Mars.

Is this in response to some criticism posted with the discussions a day or two ago.The default day of the form is 2003...

Well, nobody denies the role of Mars society and specially the role of Bob Zubrin with his aggressive charm and ability to get public attention.

The point is that MS is a little slow to give an adequate response to the new NASA vision. Not with declarations but with real action. Now is the time to influence senators and congressmen. Instead MS is focusing on Hubble what practically helps the enemies of the Mars projects. The things start to look as Mars vs. Hubble. Hubble has more time to live and this could wait. We are talking about two-three very important first months that could give a birth to the Mars plan or put to die. For example MS was not adequate to attack the plan for ISS, which everybody now realizes was a time consuming, Shuttle feeding blunder, and postponed the Mars plans for one generation span.

I think that there is a new situation and MS has to change with accordance to the new situation. It has to be more practical and drop the anthems, the new Mars Constitution and other childish things and put 100% of its effort to be a vanguard in propagating the new vision. Hopefully the next conference will give the answer. How about accelerating the conference?

You are quite right with both parties need to change in that it is not an us versus them time.
This also includes all makers of Rockets and hardware as well.

All organizations that will and have given input into the SEI vision must be pulling on the arms and ears of congress and senators alike. Hopefully all in the same direction as the vision has been given.

That is why the Moon to Mars charter is posted that way, not to change the vision but to find way of implementing and getting us there instead.
