Putin Calls for Demilitarization of Space

Posted by jburk to General News at April 12, 2004 12:13 PM

President Vladimir Putin on Monday reaffirmed his support for the demilitarization of space but added that Russia must be ready to counter others' moves to the contrary. In a speech to top space officials on Cosmonauts Day, which marks the 43rd anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's epochal spaceflight, Putin also hailed the Soviet Union's space glory and emphasized that space research remains a top priority for the government.

I think so long as both countries look at space for peiceful ends that there will never be a problem with the use of Satelites but when the first real weapon is there, now then that will open up a whole new cold war. This one will be in outer space rather than around Berlin.

Well I'm afraid we've (US) already started it. At the recent meeting for discussing how best to implement Bush's space vision, one of the major subjects was the air force's desire to 'work more closely' with NASA to implement satillite disruption and protection techniques. In short, to be able to deny access to space to countries we are having a war with and to better protect our own from the 'aggressor states'.

Yup... and then there is this "race" for that sweet spot on the Moon where sunlight can be caught by solar cells (almost) every hour of the day.

What does Bush want more: Space or nobody else in space. From an earthling point of view space is obviously a great place to attack any country from. Only because of this reason space should be secured. This is sad, but true.

You cannot make a spaceplan for the next 100 years if you are not sure you will survive them.
Should the USA rule our solar system? Well... if anybody has to... maybe.
A great step for mankind would be if the USA, Europe, Russia and China would cooperate and mix their missions in such a way that a cold war would be devestating to all of them. Therefore a cold war would not take place (think of all the billions of tax payers' money all over the world that would be at stake). Offcourse a mix of technlology would benefit everybody as well, not to mention the budget that the world powers could genereate together.
This way the space missions could bring Earth a big step closer to World Peace.

Somehow I am affraid we have men on Mars before something like this will happen...
