Plan to build emissions scrubber

Posted by tourdemars to Terraforming at April 13, 2004 11:27 AM

Engineers are trying to build a system to remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in an effort to reduce climate warming. Two companies based in Tucson, Arizona, in the US are involved in the project, which aims to complete the first phase of a working unit by early 2005.

I admit, that stopping deforestization and growing more trees would be a more humanitarian approach (and cheaper), but the tech does has some useful applications.

1)Moon/Mars colonys could better regulate CO2 levels under their dome.
2)Venus' atmosphere contains mainly CO2. If a machine could be built like this to survive surface temperatures (think most of it underground) then Venus could one day be terraformed as well.

Also it is important to note that the machine wouldn't be making O2 from CO2, rather it would 'scrub' CO2 from the air. Unless it could be made to be super-efficiant, or cheaply reproduced, the benefits would remain local. Cities might one day work a large CO2 scrubbing machine into their budgets since CO2 tends to blanket cities and is slow to move on because it is so heavy.

So if it is only scrubing the CO2 from the air that means that there is a waste byproduct to take care of. Maybe there is a way to preform electrolisys on the CO2 much like that of water braking it down into it's elements of Hydrogen and Oxygen by machine. Then the carbon could be reused if compressed as diamonds or of something else that would be of use.

That's an idea. Obviously it would have to rather engery efficent to handle a lot of CO2 at a time to be effective.

Maybe it could even be solar powered and freeze the 02 to use as rocket fuel. Wouldn't that be nice? Take that all you 'why are we spending millions on space when the money is needed here' people.

Posted by: zach at April 14, 2004 08:46 AM

Here is another thought if one could fly using solar power into these polluted areas and collect and cool the air, then force it to seperate each chemically from the other as each becomes liquid it might work. I am no sure on the cooling requirements to get to liquid temperatures for carbon. Simply release the O2 back into the air and bring the Carbon back to be recycled or stored.

Well, ok it's more clear to me now. It might be an alternative for trees.
When we will use a machine like that we cure the symptoms, instead of the disease.
Why not work on solar powered energy and improve the solar cells more and more. Make more stuff that work on electricity (like cars) to decrease the worldwide output of CO2.
Solar power is probably the only power that can be used in space if you do not want to re-fuel.
Lets improve that technology.

Prozac, the sad thing is, its not the technology that is the problem, its corporatations. Why aren't we using solar power more broadly now? Because it is cheap and virtually limitless. Oil companies want to keep us using oil till there is no more so that they can keep charging more and more as the supply runs down. The oil comapnies have been buying wonderful inventions from people and letting them sit on the selves for decades now. Oil is THE busniness in America. It is the only neccessity that you can't go out and get for yourself. Wars are being fought right now to ensure that America keeps its oil supply. This war isn't about liberating people (people I might add that treat half their population as slaves [women]). There is not link from Osama Bin Laden to Saddam. This war is simply a strong message to Arab countries, 'keep that oil flowing and cheap or else....'. I can't believe how stupid Americans are to support this war and this president. Ok, Im sorry, I know this isn't a site dedicated to political views but I had to say it.

Posted by: zach at April 14, 2004 12:07 PM

Thats ok Zach some Americans feel that he is just finishing Daddy's war from 14 years ago as well. That it is about the Oil and not the peoples freedom from such leaders of there nations.
I too beleive that oil companies are driving up the price just to make a buck for we have no choice. Places are just to far apart to Bicycle, run, walk or use other slower modes of transportation. A car is a must in rural new England.

Posted by: Harold LaValley at April 14, 2004 12:21 PM

The oil buying countries should unite in developing solar power. We don't have to expect much from the oil producing ones.
Are there any (capable)?

It is hard to say if Zach is completely right.
I think that demand is essential as well, not only supply. If we all demand electric cars, eventually they will make them, probably very soon in that case. Maybe companies like GE, Sony and Philips could start producing electric cars. Great PR. They might have no connection to oil companies at all. What a market they would enter... the growth in turnover they could achieve...
I'm just thinking out loud here.
