Technically, we were dead. The diesel generator had quit, cutting power to the Hab and, presumably, our life support systems. Like any good Mars base, the Hab had a backup power source. But that generator failed as well. Don Foutz, our local mission support team and proprietor of the Whispering Sands Motel in Hanksville, drove out to have a look at the problem.TrackBack URL for this entry:

So if this had really been on Mars which one of the crew is the one they left behind that could have fixed this problem, it certainly was not a specialist. It was the jack of all trades that was left behind.
It does not matter where the crew is in space we must be able to fix what ever breaks down when it occurs. We simply can not wait for a replacement.
So what was the third, fourth, fifth what ever was necessary for the contingency backup plans?
