Ammonia may have been found in Mars' atmosphere which some scientists say could indicate life on the Red Planet. Researchers say its spectral signature has been tentatively detected by sensors on board the European Space Agency's orbiting Mars Express craft. Ammonia survives for only a short time in the Martian atmosphere so it must be getting constantly replenished. There are two possible sources: either active volcanoes, none of which have been found yet on Mars, or microbes.TrackBack URL for this entry:

Well it was not to long ago the Methane that was found. It was trumpeted about by the Mars Express craft also to be an indicator of life as well.
I am sure that there are other such so called indicators even here on earth. But out there at Mars it is a whole new ball game due to the solar storms that can alter the atmosphere dramatically making it difficult actually prove or disprove from those style of measurements.
Other more direct tests must be used.

And on another note of gas... natural resources back last month a Nasa article read Poop power or something like that. Any way the same story line is running on the msnnbc site. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5335635
Poop power? Sewage turned into electricity
Fuel cells and waste sludge mix to power treatment plant.
Ok but on the ISS currently all the poop you can. Is stored and returned to Earth aboard a Proton ( russian craft). I am sure many uses could be made of such. It could even be used to seed a martain environment with organic materials.

Correction: There are at least three possible sources: active volcanoes, microbes or lightning

Have there been any updates to this story? I have heard that the scientist who was to do the press conference has suddenly become...ummmm...impossible to find. Any truth to that?
