Rovers to get extra time on Mars

Posted by tourdemars to Mars Exploration Rovers at July 22, 2004 12:31 PM

The US space agency's Mars Rovers will be given another seven months to explore the Red Planet, says NASA. Dr Firouz Naderi, director of Solar System exploration at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told BBC News Online that he had recommended the missions be extended. Although NASA headquarters has said the project will not get any new money, Dr Naderi - who manages the rover finances - says the money will be found from elsewhere within the organisation.

Like the article mentions, cash will be the problem not the rovers.

Intelligent life 100-1000 light years away with
ET only 20 years away for first contact in the future through SETI? Do these professional technocrats get paid to come up with this probability analysis science fiction? I kind of
like it, reminding me of the traditional cultural habit of recycling of 50s B grade sci fi movies.
May the force, or is sci fi pr, be with you? I
am headed for my garage door, now a stargate.

Isn’t it crazy? This is exactly as in the joke about a guy who wrote: I am willing to give one of my hands for the chance to have two hands. If you have two working rovers on Mars what is the point to kill them and save money for two new rovers (they will cost you more money anyway)? NASA has an outpost on Mars. Keep it alive and suck out of it the last bit of science. That is the only correct decision.

Emil: you and many others that post or read the mars news articles I am sure agree with your thoughts. Suck every bit of knowledge that is possible out of them while they are still working. In fact search for ways to help them get though the Martian winter as well.
