In yesterday's Mars Exploration Rover photo release "A Glimpse of What's to Come", the large version of the image apparently contains a glimpse of Spirit's own heatshield which lies across the crater "Bonneville" from the rover's current location.

Consult this overhead image of Gusev crater for context of where the heatshield crash-landed, on the northern rim of the crater. The rover Spirit is currently south of the crater, looking across in this image.

The photo release caption makes no mention of this, but its pretty clear to us that this reflective object is the heat shield. That, or something else that bears investigation.
Update: Today's photo release also apparently shows the reflective glint of the heat shield, yet still no mention is made in the photo caption.
Is JPL saving this for the next press conference?

The heat shield is a perfect place to go because it offers a ready made gouge in the surface.
Posted by: John S. Borowski at March 11, 2004 11:32 AMI believe the spacecraft engineers would also love to have a close-up look at the heatshield, for post-mortem analyses.

Actually the heat shield theory is not only plausible but likely. Just look at the trajectory and debris including bounces, final resting spot for the spirit lander, the parachute and yes.... the heat shield.
LOL the real truth. Hey, I got some aliens in my back yard, I'll sell tickets at $10 bucks a pop if you wanna come see them!
Take care all, and remember... Think Critically!
